Actually very realistic, Dad may end up trying these for a time as well. This little unit lets you see up to 50' in complete darkness and closely resembles the very expensive military model in that is does indeed use infra red technology for identification. A small switch on the side of the goggle head-set allows them to switch from a black-and-white to a green screen display.
